August 12, 2005 Trafalgar Township's bicentennial in 2006 Aug 12, 2005 Next year will mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Trafalgar Township, and a group of local residents wish to celebrate the birthday. Founded in 1806, the Township of Trafalgar brought settlers to the present-day areas of north Oakville and Milton. The township was in continuous existence until its amalgamation with the Town of Oakville in 1962. A group of local volunteers is working to develop events to mark the anniversary and celebrate the history of the township. "This is an exciting opportunity for the town to recognize its history," said Councillor Jeff Knoll, whose Ward 5 constituency was originally part of Trafalgar Township. While plans are still very preliminary, Knoll said volunteers are considering organizing historical tours, holding a farmer's market and collecting documents to build a permanent archive of material about the township. To get involved with the celebrations, contact Knoll at 905-257-7258 or jknoll@oakville.ca, or visit www.trafalgar200.ca. |
